Carbon Neutral? You decide.
As I was cycling back from delivering a projector, on one of our cargo carrying 8-freight bicycles, I noticed a courier van with a carbon neutral sign on it.
Despite how long I stared at it, and watched the fumes coming out of the van, I was intrigued how they had the audacity to state that they were “Carbon Neutral”. A little further down the road, I spotted a “Carbon Neutral” black taxi, once again I listened to it and heard the putt, putt of a diesel engine, I moved around the back, expecting to smell chip fat or sunflower oil, but only got a nose full of diesel fumes.
It concerned me so much that when I got back to my office, I looked up a few items.
It seems that the “Carbon Neutral” moniker is the latest bandwagon that people are using for marketing. One reason they can do this is by carbon offsetting. The way it works is that for every 1 tonne of CO2 you are unable to reduce, you can pay for 1 tonne to be reduced somewhere else in the world (you buy a 'carbon credit'). Carbon emissions are thus counterbalanced by carbon savings.
It does astound me that companies are happy to pay money to try to salve their conscience (or have the carbon neutral slogan), yet aren’t prepared to stem it at the source, i.e. the thing creating the emissions to start with.
We will carry on hiring Projectors, Screens, PA Systems and Staging by bicycle, but don’t expect to see a Carbon Neutral sign on them, we expect people to have a little more intelligence than that.
